Over the past year, I’ve traveled to every corner of South Carolina, meeting with families, small business owners, and workers who are doing everything they can to build a better life. And no matter where I go, I keep hearing the same thing: it’s getting harder just to make ends meet.

Not long ago, I met a single mother in her 40s raising two kids. She had done everything right. She worked hard, saved what she could, and bought a home a few years ago. It was a big moment for her family, a positive sign that they were moving forward.

Today, she’s no longer living in that home.
